The Challenge Has Begun - Good Luck to Our Trainers and Their Brumbies
Week 22 Update - Angie Wicks & Major Bob
Bobby’s had an easy few weeks, just slow and consistent ground work and ridden work with Bobby now both in the arena and around the property. I would like to get him on the float and take him out and about to work on building his confidence. I hope to do a few float trips and trail rides in December.

We’ve had a bit of much needed rain this week so Major Bob has had an easy week which has probably been good for him. In between the rain I have done a few ground work sessions. The days are also starting to get hot up here in QLD so we bought him a new summer mesh rug which he looks adorable in.

Another consistent week with Major Bob doing short ground work session before each ride. When riding him I am working on both loose rein riding exercises and riding with contact. At the moment my loose rein program is getting him to hook onto a small circle on a loose rein at a walk and jog, this is a mental exercise to get him to tune into my focus and body position and hunt the circle on his own. I am making a program out of this exercise and each day he is getting a tiny bit better with the exercise.
I am also doing contact riding with him and working on keeping his shoulders straighter under him in each ride. Young horses constantly fall in and drift out with their shoulders and this takes time for them to learn, plus they have to learn how to balance a rider. Most horses are also uneven through their body and have one dominant side just like us. I believe that you can help horses to get much more even in their body alignment by strengthening their weaker side through correct training and ridden exercises. Major Bob is left side dominate so I have been concentrating on supporting and correcting this in all his contact exercises. He is slowly getting better and becoming more even, though this type of training takes a long time so we will just keep chipping away at it, we are in no rush, it will take as long as it takes.
PS – The photo was taken a few weeks back when I took him to a clinic. I thought it was pretty cute. Bobby met Brett the warmblood who towed over him J

There’s not anything too exciting or new to report this week. I have just been playing around with his ground skills some days and then making sure he is getting consistency with his ridden work both in the arena and around the property. Though he is coming out of himself more and I am seeing more expression with everything he does.
He is doing some lovely work online and at liberty. The photo shows him doing a side pass towards me.

Major Bob is looking pretty handsome in this photo, he has upgraded to my new Jim Taylor saddle and loving life. There’s not a lot to report this week. Just lots of consistent ground work, riding in the arena and also riding out around the property. I did his first liberty session in the big 80 x 40 meter arena this week and he stayed with me the whole time. With his ridden work I am just working on getting a solid foundation and focusing on him being relaxed and confident with everything he does. I thoroughly enjoy spending time with him, every time I see him he warms my heart. I have so much love for this little guy.

Last weekend I took Major Bob on his first float trip with me to teach a ground work and ridden clinic in Mondure QLD. It was a 5 ½ hour trip there and back but I felt he was well prepared and travelled with an older quiet gelding. I am happy to say that Major Bob was amazing! I could tell he was a little outside his comfort zone but he trusted me and basically didn’t put a foot wrong the whole weekend. He is also starting to become a lot more expressive and interact more with the environment around him. He used to try and resort to more of a ‘shut down’ state to disassociate as he’s a horse that doesn’t want to move his feet a lot. Whenever this happened I would slowly re-engaged him back to me as I didn’t want this behavioral pattern to form. He is not wanting to go there nowhere near as much now, hence he is showing much more expression in his face and body.
When I am working with any horse I don’t ever allow them to go into an over reactive emotional state, let’s call this ‘flight state behaviours’. Sometimes these over stimulated flight state behaviours are not that obvious but a horse may be a little agitated, restless, have trouble standing still or relaxing, be nervous, anxious and/or be worried even if they are not moving their feet or these flight state behaviours may be more obvious like exploding, pulling back, rearing, blasting off, bolting or trying to run you over.
Then on the flip side horses can go into ‘freeze state behaviours’. When I work with horses I don’t want to allow them to go into these types of states either. This is where they disassociate with people, their environment and even themselves to cope with whatever is going on for them. These freeze state behaviors can be very mild to where they look like they are asleep or resting but really they are disassociating and shutting down. They can look quiet and relaxed but easily startle or can even explode when they come out these freeze states or just randomly explode at times and you can’t figure out what caused it. However, some horses are more obvious when they go into freeze state behaviours, they get this really glazed over look on their face and you can tell they have gone to another place.
I see a lot of horses operating between the flight state and the freeze state, they go from one state to the other state. Some horses show only mild behavioral signs of this and some horses are much more obvious. Some horses are more prone to being in the flight state most of the time and then go into freeze state to rest but the freeze state is not a state of relaxation, it’s just a state that helps them numb and cope before going back into the flight state. Then there are horses that cope better by operating in the freeze state most of the time, then when it gets too much they may explode before going back into mild, moderate or extreme freeze state. Think about how exhausting these behaviour patterns would be!?!?
I have mention the two behavioral states that I don’t’ want to allow my horses to go into so I should mention the two ideal behavioral states that I actually want to encourage and foster when I am with my horse. The first is to have my horse fully engaged with me and the learning process and the second state is to be completely relaxed. The first one is when the horse is in an optimal state of arousal for learning. They are fully engaged, present and connected with me but not through force but rather having a two way conversation. In this state me and my horse are in flow or in the zone. This state builds and fosters trust, confidence, expression, playfulness and curiosity. Then the other state that I teach my horse to find and eventually crave is complete relaxation. I want my horse to learn to find this state when they are in between working on a skill, resting or just hanging out together. Whenever they are with me they are in this state and feel a sense of deep relaxation, calmness and contentment. In this state they can think and process all our interactions. They are fully present with me and their environment but they are completely relaxed. Think about how nice it would be for a horse to only operate between these two state all of the time. They are either in an engaged, connected, learning frame or in a deep state of relaxation and peace.
For many years I used to teach ground work skills to people but over the past 12 months or so I am realising I am doing SO much more than certain skills when I work with horses. I knew I was doing more but I found it so hard to verbalize what I was feeling and doing. I am excited to say that I am starting to be able to explain what I see and feel when I am working with a horse on the ground. I am focusing less on teaching ground skills to people now and focusing on helping people understand and identify these negative behavioral patterns horses go into; ‘flight state behaviour’ and ‘freeze state behaviour’. Then I can teach people to use a skill or technique but to focus more on the connection and engagement with their horse so their horse can start to learn to regulate their emotions better and intern change their behavioral patterns.
First we have to be able to understand and identify these behavioral patterns with our horses, then we have to learn the skills and techniques to support our horse to show them that there’s a much nicer way to be in their day to day life and interactions with people. I believe when you can learn to do this with horses, your horse start to look at you very differently and all their interactions in our human world become much more positive and enjoyable for them. This can take a long time to learn but it’s an amazing journey of deep discoveries of developing a much stronger bond and relationship with horses, not to mention what you learn about yourself along the way. When you do this type of work with horses they start to see you and their world through completely different eyes. To me this is the magic and art of great horsemanship.
Learning to know when a horse is about to go into either of these negative behavioral states is a skill that has taken me 10 years to learn and another 10 years to refine and finally now be able to explain better to people. When I am teaching a horse now I don’t ever do things that puts the horse into one of these states, this has taken a long time for me to learn to read each horses thresholds in the teaching and learning process. By learning to do ground work using skills to focus on connection and engagement and then teach them how to find deep levels of relaxation and calm can help teach horses to break these negative behavioral patterns and live a much deeper, fulfilled relationship with their human partner.
This kind of work with horses is something that I am very passionate about sharing and teaching.

This week Major Bob met one of my other horses Django. I have started working Bobby and Django as a team doing things online together and working on a few things at liberty. We are still in the early stages of doing this work but I am having lots of fun with both my special boys. I have also recently taught Bobby to side pass towards me so I was then able to get both Bobby and Django to side pass towards me together.
This Friday I am driving to Mondure in QLD to teach a ground work and ridden clinic so I am taking Bobby on his first outing in the float. I am taking Madi’s gelding Sugar with me so he will have someone to travel with. Really looking forward to getting him out and about. I will let you know how he goes in next week’s post.
Until then, happy horsing.

Major Bob is going great and we all adore having him around. I have been riding Major Bob most days in the arena and also go for a ride around the property every few days. I am making progress each ride with his ridden education, he has gained SO much confidence in the last few weeks. When I dismount after each ride he knickers to me about three times and turns his head and nuzzles into my belly, he sure knows how to pull on my heart strings.
The last week we did our first liberty session in the square yard. When I say liberty I don’t mean just going around the wall of the yard free lunging at liberty. I mean that he did his first small circles close around me and he had the choice to leave me or stay and he chose to stay with me and stayed connected to me the whole time. I also did some ‘match and mirror’ work around the arena at liberty and he also stuck by my side and tuned into my body language and communication cues. I have also been working on his draw and he now comes trotting to me a liberty in the big 80 x 40 meter arena. I am loving creating this special bond with him built off trust, confidence, leadership and connection. If I can teach a wild Brumby this in such a short time frame then anyone can learn this with their own horse but like anything good there's no short cuts to the process. First you have to learn all the ground skills online to develop a language and build a relationship and connection with your horse. Then learn to refine all this for liberty preparation and then you can start liberty when you and your horse have done all the hard work. It's a long process and years of dedication to learn how to do these special things with horses but it's a journey with soooo much to discover about yourself and horses. I hope my journey with Major Bob the Brumby inspires you to keep building a special relationship with your horse.
Love and connection,
Angie & Major Bob

I have been focusing on mainly ridden work this week. I still do a little ground work each day during the saddling process but I am spending most of my time riding Major Bob. He is a horse that doesn’t’ want to offer much forward but I have been super patient and knew as his confidence develops the forward would come. This week he is starting to relax more when trotting faster and I have been able to roll him up into a canter and maintain the canter for longer periods. I am working on side passing and improving his understanding of leg and rein aids. I am also working on lots of steering and guiding off the outside rein and outside leg. He gets tied up with the other horses after his ride each morning, then hosed off and taken back to his paddock while being led off the quad bike, he is now trotting up next to the quad bike which is pretty cool. He is getting lots of scratches off our wonderful groom Madi each day who he now loves and John also stops between riding horses to hang out with him and scratch him each day so he is getting so much more confident with different people.

Major and Bob and I have had another fun week. We have been playing on the ground improving all his ground skills and continuing his ridden work each day too. After I finish my arena work I take him for rides out around the property most days which he really enjoys. I just started teaching him to sidepass this week and his cantering is coming along too. He has also learnt to solid tie this last week after each ride. I have spent the last 7 weeks preparing him for this with all his ground skills. Then he was tied in a really safe area that he feels relaxed in and of course with his best buddy Doc tied right next to him. He also wears a special neck collar for safety and support. He has accepted this process really well and is standing quiet and relaxed each day. I will slowly build the length of time that he learns to tie up over the coming weeks, he will also transition to other safe areas when he is ready. Learning to tie up and stand quiet and relaxed is such an important life skill for horse’s to learn but it is extremely important that you prepare and teach this process correctly so there are no accidents and this sets them up for the rest of their life.

Major Bob had his first trim by the farrier this week and he stood beautifully for her. All the ground work set him up for a positive first experience.
He also had the vet and dentist do his do his teeth at the end of last week, the vet took his time and really liked him.
I can officially say that Major Bob is rising 5 years old! The vet said he wasn’t 5 yet but would be in a few months so we may have to make up a date for his birthday in the next few months.
I have been working on consistency with his ground work and ridden work. He is really starting to relax into the routine and we are really enjoy spending time with each other.

I’ve had an enjoyable week with Major Bob this week riding him in the arena and then finishing most rides with a trail ride around the property with his buddy Master Doc.
We have also spent time walking on and off the float each day building the length of time he spends on there.
I have also gone for a few walks down to our creek area to play online with him going up and down gullies and over logs and also just hanging out picking on the fresh grass and enjoying each other’s company.
Bobby is looking very handsome in the photo taken after his first bath last week with his two products from McDowell’s Herbs.
The first product he started on is Perform-A-Calm which is formulated with herbs that have traditionally been used to nourish and calm the nervous disposition of horses that seem to be overly anxious in their home or when introduced to new stimulus.
The second product is Equigesta Pre-Biotic which contains a combination of pure herbal powders, brewer's yeast and bentonite clay. Traditionally this combination has been used to support and stimulate the growth and activity of good bacteria in the digestive system.

It’s been another big week for Major Bob with lots of first times…. His first bath all over and he looks amazing! His first time with a rug, his first trail rides around the property (of course with his best mate Doc), his first de-worming and also his first time learning float loading.
Also our products from McDowell’s Herbs turned up last Friday so we introduced these great products into his hard feed too. A big thank you to McDowell’s for supporting the Australian Brumby Challenge.
Bobby is now accepting new things so much quicker now that he fully trust me. We have built a great relationship and he now looks to me for reassurance with everything. I have become very fond of this little guy and am really loving our time together.

This last week I have been doing lots of ground work with Major Bob in the big arena, especially working on building his confidence with cantering on the 22 foot rope on the ground while lunging. Each day I have been building on how long he can canter for and each day he is offering more forward as his confidence has grown. This is also helping with his ridden work. He is the type of horse that is not very forward at all and has a tendency to go inside himself if you allow it, every day I am also working on getting him to show more expression.
All week I have been riding him in the big arena by himself. The first few days I let Doc walk around inside the arena to support Bobby and the rest of the week Doc has been tied to the arena watching. This has really helped with Major Bob’s confidence knowing Doc is still there with him. Bobby wasn’t offering much forward at all when I was riding him by himself but I didn’t want to make him feel wrong or scare him by making him go forward, I had a feeling it was just a lack of confidence. I knew I had to think outside the square and make a game out of creating forward. So I set up two cones about 50 meters apart in the arena and played a game of ‘point to point’ with him. I asked him to walk to the first cone, at first this took about 10 minutes to get to one cone as he would only walk a few meters at a snail’s pace and then stop, so I let him rest for a bit and then asked him forward again, I didn’t rush him and let him take his time to make it to the first cone. As soon as we got to the cone I made a big deal about it, I got off him and gave him some pellets (that he now loves) and we rested with lots of scratches then turned around and make the slow walk back to the other cone. After another 10 minutes we made it to the other cone so I got off and treated him again with some pellets and scratches. By the end of the first session he started to walk much faster and not stop as often, he was starting to figure out the game.
The second day he walked faster to the first cone and then returning to the other cone he got even faster with his walk, he remembered the game straight away. Before long he was trotting the last 30 meters to the cones and showing much more expression. I was then able to start to refine his upwards transitions and he was starting to trot off a really light suggestion. I was also able to take out the treats and only give them every few cones once he understood the game.
By the third day he was trotting nearly the whole way to the cones and then started to chew on the cones and pick them up in his mouth and knocked them over. He was really starting to enjoy the game as much as me.
Then yesterday I made a big rectangle around the arena with the cones and wasn’t sure how he would go with this. But as soon as I pointed him towards the other cones he was off. I was then able to work on some steering aids because I now had forward. Then towards the end of the ride I was also able to do some small circles around the cones and teach him to back up too. Without forward motion you can’t do anything and your horse can learn to jack up and go wherever they like. By using the game of the cones, positive reinforcement and lots of patience I was able to get forward without scaring or stressing him. Yesterday he did lots of relaxing blowing and also yawning and I could tell he was pretty pleased with himself. It was slow going but I know once his confidence grows he will offer me so much more and I will keep his trust in me in the process. Next week I plan on trail riding him with his buddy Doc all around the property, I think this will also help with his forward.

Major Bob has been getting more confident each day. I have been teaching him to lead off my old gelding Doc and taught him to find the sweet spot beside us at a walk and trot on both the near and off side to help build his confidence leading up to his first ride.
Once he was confident with this in the arena we were able to venture out around the property, the first ride out he was glued to Doc’s side but each day we went a bit further and he slowly became more confident. By the forth ride out leading beside Doc we rode around a 30 acre paddock up and down the hills and he loved it.
I have also been working on the mouthing process and long reining from the ground.
Major Bob then had his first ride early this week in the smaller yard and at the end of this week he had his first ride in the big arena.
I am super happy with his progress.
I’m really loving spending time with this beautiful little guy.

I have had another great week with Major Bob. This past week I have worked Bobby with my old gelding Doc who is super confident and calm. I’ve worked through the preparation for saddle, saddling and leading off Doc. Bobby has gained so much confidence through working with Doc and having him hold his hand every step of the way.
Bobby is the type of horse that doesn’t want to move his feet a lot, he has a high startle response but has more of a tendency to freeze (shut down). I believe if he was pushed over the edge of his ‘Window of Tolerance’ or not given time to come back down and deactivate his nervous system he could then go into fight mode with defensive behaviour rather than flight mode of run or move his feet. I am super aware of this and every day I work on taking him up a little so he is in a slightly higher state of arousal without taking him too far and then I allow him to come back down and deactivate and this helps him find deeper levels of relaxation which allows me to go to the next step in his training. I am also breaking every step down into tiny steps to build his trust and confidence. It’s important I read when he wants to go into freeze (shut down) and then softly work on keeping him engaged with me and the learning process. Every day he is trusting me more and more and he is showing more expression every day too. I am really enjoying every moment of this journey with him.

I have had lots of fun with Major Bob this week, every day his confidence and trust in me and his new environment has grown. Next week we will be working a lot more on building trust in other people. It took such a long time for him to trust me so it will be a slow process for him to trust other people. We will do this really slowly and be super aware of his thresholds.
He is not a horse that wants to move his feet a lot, he would rather go internal at times and pretends everything is okay when I know it’s not. He looks like he is asleep and relaxed most of the time but he has a super high startle response to environmental sounds, rather than flight he would choose freeze. It is really important I read when he is actually relaxed or when he is going inside himself. I would rather freeze than flight, though none of these if I had the choice.
Over the coming weeks I will help him to choose to keep actively engaging with me and his environment in a relaxed way. I want to help him to come outside of himself so we can see his little personality shine. I know this will develop in time as his confidence grows in me, people and his new environment. I am really aware when he goes inside himself and I make sure I do something slowly to re-engage him back to the learning process and to re-connect with me.
This week he has spent a lot of time with my old gelding Master Doc who is super confident, calm and gentle, I know he will gain a lot of confidence from Doc, I am so blessed to have him help me on this journey. I am loving learning more about this little guy every day.

DAY 1 - Monday 6th July
‘Major Bob’ a beautiful chestnut brumby turned up this afternoon around 4pm. I feel like my level of horsemanship hasn’t been tested like this for such a long time, I’m super excited about what I will learn on this journey. I know most of that feedback will come from Major Bob, so I will need to tune in and listen real carefully.
DAY 2
I have already spent a huge amount of time with him since he arrived yesterday afternoon with lots of short regular sessions. After working with him yesterday afternoon I thought it would be days before I would even be able to get near him, let alone touch him but he is slowly starting to trust me, he initiated his first touch on my arm mid-morning and after lunch I touched him for the first time, by this afternoon I could rub him with my stick and unlock his hindquarters and get him to follow me a little. He has a very high flight instinct for a brumby but we are making progress. I can feel myself already getting very attached to this little guy…
DAY 3
I did a lot of short sessions with him again and his confidence in me has grown immensely. Today I was able to do a lot more desensitisation with my stick and string and my body movements using approach and retreat going in and out of his ‘bubble’ and really tuning into his thresholds. It is so important how I use my body posture, body position and energy when I do this. I want to make progress but if I go too far at any point I lose his trust and confidence in me, a real balancing act at this point in time with him. Trust takes a very long time to build but you can lose it in a second.
DAY 4
We made massive progress today and the little guy is trying so hard to trust me. I broke down all the steps to haltering and haltered him safely and calmly. He is lunging at liberty and facing up and changing directions. I was also able to clip the lead rope on and start working him on line too.
DAY 5
Today it only took a few minutes before Major Bob ‘Bobby’ allowed me to touch him this morning. He also chewed on the stick a few times and told me where he wanted me to scratch him with the stick. When I was rubbing his shoulder he moved towards me to ask me to scratch him harder. He is showing so much more expression today and I feel like I’m just starting to see a glimpse of his personality. He then went onto to yawn for about 5 minutes straight. This was a HUGE break through and I was so proud of him. I can tell he is really enjoying his interactions with me and we are already forming a lovely relationship.

Due to the COVID restrictions Angie's Brumby VBA Major needed to make the journey to Angie via horse transport.
VBA Major was loaded on Saturday along with our other Brumbies that were headed off to warmer weather in NSW and Qld.
Whenever we need to transport unhandled Brumbies, we always work with the team at M&J Peterson Horse Handling and Breaking Horse Transport.
These guys are calm, empathetic and they are just wonderful with our wild ones!
Thankyou so much to Matt and Logan who headed off on the long trip up to Upper Caboolture Via NSW with our precious cargo!
We are looking forward to Angie's updates from next week.
