Mick lives in Braidwood NSW and has been training in Australia for the past eight years, with his prior experience running busy stables in the UK. He has worked with a variety of breeds from Station horses and Campdrafters in the north to Welshys and Riding School horses in the middle to Race horses in Tasmania and Trail Horses in Victoria.
This is the third time that Mick has competed in the Australian Brumby Challenges, having previously trained Honey in 2016 and Coolabah in 2018, who he kept after the ABC. Mick is a passionate advocate for our Aussie Brumbies and his calm, patience makes him a perfect trainer for them.
Mick has a passion for horses in general, with his main passion being to find the best way to work with every individual horse. He feels every horse has something new to teach him and he has to adapt his methods to suit.
Mick's training embodies patience, trust, respect and consistency
VBA Shortcake is a gorgeous light chestnut mare with a full blaze.
She was caught from New South Wales Kosciuszko National Park in late August, 2017 with her family group, including her son, VBA Strawberry.
Sadly, Shortcake and her family group were ‘gifted’ by NPWS to someone who sold them to a third party and they ended up at the Echuca sales less than two weeks after their capture from Kosi.
By the time we heard about them, they had been sold through the auction to the Maffra knackery.
We were able to purchase them and bring them to safety here at Brumby Junction sanctuary.
Shortly after her arrival with us, Shortcake gave birth to a beautiful filly, VBA Taffy.
She has been able to raise her in peace in our larger paddocks prior to coming in for the McDowell's Australian Brumby Challenge.
